BWI Group
Salesforce and SharePoint Integration with a Custom Lightning Component
BWI Group needed a more reliable way to connect Salesforce and SharePoint while reducing the technical debt, errors, and maintenance associated with its existing custom-code solution. Summit developed a custom Salesforce Lightning solution that integrated the two platforms, allowing users to access and manage SharePoint content directly from Salesforce while supporting BWI’s authentication, permissions, and folder-management requirements.

About BWI Group
BWI Group is a global automotive technology company specializing in vehicle brake and suspension systems. Its technologies span braking, passive and active suspension, and electronically controlled chassis systems designed to support vehicle safety, ride, handling, comfort, and the continued evolution of electric, connected, and automated vehicles.
Although BWI Group was founded in 2009, its automotive heritage reaches back to 1909 in Dayton, Ohio, with the founding of the Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company, or Delco. Over the decades, those operations evolved through Delco and Delphi, building a long history of brake, suspension, and chassis technology development. In 2009, BWI Group became the owner of Delphi’s suspension and brake businesses and continued that engineering heritage as a global automotive supplier.
Today, BWI Group develops and manufactures brake and suspension technologies for automotive manufacturers worldwide, with engineering and production operations across Asia, Europe, and North America.
The Challenge
BWI Group needed a more reliable way to manage the integration of its complex automotive system contracts and reports with Salesforce. Its existing solution relied on custom code that had created significant technical debt, caused frequent errors, and required substantial maintenance, including challenges related to Salesforce storage limits.
BWI sought a best-practice solution that included seamless Salesforce and SharePoint integration, allowing direct links to records, folder creation within Salesforce, and adherence to BWI’s defined hierarchy rules for folder management. The solution also needed to be adaptable for potential future use in Salesforce Communities, now known as Experience Cloud.
The Solution
Summit implemented a custom solution to help BWI Group modernize Salesforce and reduce technical debt while addressing the SharePoint integration requirements identified during the project. The solution included:
Custom Salesforce Lightning component development to give users access to SharePoint documents directly from Salesforce.
Integration using the Salesforce REST API, Microsoft Graph API, Azure Active Directory, and Microsoft authentication flows to support single sign-on access.
Asynchronous future methods and custom file-chunking algorithms to handle larger files while working within Salesforce platform limits.
A SharePoint Files application within Salesforce that allowed users to access, upload, and manage SharePoint documents linked to Salesforce records.
Authentication flows that reduced login frequency to once every 90 days, with administrators able to control user access based on SharePoint permissions.
Results for Our Client
The new Salesforce and SharePoint integration gave BWI Group a more reliable way to access and manage SharePoint content directly within Salesforce. Users could create folders, share contracts and PDF documents, and work within the folder-management rules established by BWI Group.
Following implementation, timeouts and errors were reduced to zero, according to the original project results. Summit also documented increased efficiency for the BWI team and greater Salesforce adoption for the related tasks.
The result was a best-practice-based solution that replaced the previous high-maintenance approach while supporting BWI’s defined access, authentication, and SharePoint permission requirements.
In our Client's Words...
“I found Summit’s consultants to be great developers and outstanding technical skills. There was a change in Sales Account Managers, so we had to do some re-education on the project. We have already started Phase II of 2 factor authentication on the same deliverable. Very pleased with how Summit’ consultants are digging into the project and offering options to best fit our needs within the available budget. There were a number of integration complexities that we all had to work through. Our company was very pleased with the end results.”
